The conventional view of science is that it is the process of observing, hypothesizing, testing, confirming or rejecting, and adopting the hypothesis that explains the observed phenomenon. Wikipedia starts it explanation of the scientific process thus:

The Scientific method is a body of techniques for investigating phenomena and acquiring new knowledge, as well as for correcting and integrating previous knowledge. It is based on gathering observable, empirical, measurable evidence, subject to the principles of reasoning[1].”
